So, after some reading and research I have decided to give the Tazer JL module a shot. If you’re into Jeeps, you’ve probably heard about the options for these little plug-in box that unlocks all sorts of features that live buried deep in the Jeep’s software. I had a SuperChips Trail Dash 2 installed on #tinythejeep and other than being able to change the DRL’s to match my aftermarket light and changing the tire size so the speedo/ odometer were correct I found that I didn’t really use a lot of the features that were available. So I’m not sure how much on the tazer ‘hacks’ I will use but again I wanted to change how my DRL’s worked and I will need to change tire size soon :) (Yup 35’s are in the future)
In theory, the Tazer JL module lets you mess around with settings that Jeep normally keeps locked up. Things like the tire size turning on extra lights, and even controlling the auto start/stop feature. It sounds great on paper, but based on my experience with the Superchips I am keeping my expectations in check until I’ve had some real time with it.
Opening the box, and there is: the Tazer JL module, a cable, and a sticker. I threw everything on the hood of my Jeep for this quick photo.
The Install
Getting this thing hooked up was pretty simple. There is a dozen videos online that go though the whole install so I won’t add to that noise but basically you just plug it in under the dash, follow a couple of prompts, and that’s it.
Features I’m Looking Forward To
Here’s where things get interesting. I haven’t tested everything yet, but a few features stood out right away:
- Tire Size Adjustment – This is the one I’m most curious about. I’m going to be running bigger tires, so if this helps my speedometer stay accurate, it’ll already be a win in my book.
- Winch Mode – Haven’t tried this yet, but it sounds handy for anyone who uses a winch. It’s supposed to let the engine idle at a higher RPM, which could be helpful if I’m ever in a sticky situation.
- Adjusting How the Day Light Running Lights work – I love the halo look on the headlights but the Canadian Version seems to insist on having the main lights (granted they are dimmer) on at the same time. I want to beable to adjust that.
- Trail Camera and Aux Switches: My jeep didn’t come with the front trail camera or the factory Aux switches but conveniently you can just add them after the fact. But to turn on these features in the jeep software would normally require a trip the dealer. The Tazer JL will allow me to turn these on myself.
The Real Test Awaits
For now, the Tazer JL is in, and I’m slowly getting familiar with it. Whether it’ll live up to the hype? I’m not sure yet. I’ll give it a proper test over the next few weeks and see if it actually makes a difference or just feels like a fancy add-on. I’ll keep you all posted as I try out these features on my regular routes and some off-road adventures.
