Strikers & movies
So here it is. Let me lay the scene out for you. I am sitting in my office working away; I am listening to The Get Up Kids. For those not in the know The Get Up Kids ROCK and all should give them a good listen. So I have them turned up really loud as I am known to do with the crazy Emo Bands. But I can still hear this underlying sound or sounds as it were. So the song hits a slower mellower part and I can really hear this commotion so I stop the tunes and Listen. Long story short there is an Strike taking place kitty corner from my place. The Stats Canada Workers are striking and getting everyone that is driving by to honk there horns and they are yelling and they are getting everybody’s attention for sure. So me being me I grabbed my camera and went down stairs.
On an entirely different note we watched Ghost World last night. That was another truly fabulous movie, by all means rent it is you can. I went to Rodger’s with the intent of renting Zoolander on the expert advice of Jodie and Per. So after wandering around the store for 10 min I decide to ask if they even have the movie, which they didn’t, so I had to get another movie. One of the draw backs of refusing to know anything about any movie that is out, Upon writing this I realize that most of you haven’t heard my tirade about movies and my refusal to know much more about them then the title. Well here it is. I refuse to know anything about a movie simply because I feel that prior knowledge of the smallest details ruins a film. I hate to watch trailers and If I do see a trailer I would prefer to not see the movie for a long time so all memory of the events contained within are forgotten or at least very fuzzy. This is a neat way to watch a film and I totally recommend it to anyone to try. This is the same reason that I don’t get into the nitty gritty details about the movies that I enjoyed, simply cause I want you to take my word for it. One draw back to this system as it were is that when left to my own devices I am sorta lost when it comes to picking a movie. So here I am, wandering around Rogers video for a half hour before I am getting ready to blindly grab whatever is on the wall and going with it, when I see Drew and Tom. They happened to be in need of a movie as well so they gave me one of the “We have both seen this but it is a good movie” hand me downs and well that was Ghost World. And it was a good movie. There now that I have wasted your time and told you nothing that you really wanted to hear I will move on to this weekends upcoming festivities. I simply can not wait until Saturday. I sort of feel a tad giddy about it in fact. I don’t really know why But it is shaping up to be a good time, a lot of people are confirmed to be coming and It should be a good time. Any who I am going to get back at it.

2 commentsMore Jodie @ Per
Just got in from another shoot with Per and Jodie. I have to say that they are two of my fav people that have come out for a shoot yet. They are good times indeed. Well they have told me that I have to watch the movie Zoolander, because under all the cheese there is a really funny flick there so I may actually rent it this evening. Well we will see. :) I will have more photos up from today and Sunday soon, I have had some computer issues that needed to be taken care off and I am still getting used to them so I am very inefficient as it stands right now. On another note and Friend of mine Eli has a singer songwriter that he wants to help out and try to make bigger, and He thinks that it may be a great photo opportunity for me so We will see about that. I am also still in contact with this other local Edmonton band, that wants photos and such but I have discovered that singers and bands and the like are really hard to schedule in to stuff because they are always out of town or otherwise predisposed. How ever we will see how it works out. I was thinking about putting some of my web and graphic design skills to work in doing a Mad promo package for bands and such. I could do the photos and the websites and the print work that they need done. Lay out posters and other press kit type stuff for them. I should bring this up with Eli and see what he thinks, because for portfolio and getting my name out and about I could do a lot of it although I would have to get back into the swing on the graphic design and web sites stuff because I have been out of the zone for so long well we will see. I am really starting to get bit with the filmmakers bug again. I am such a seasonal manic I swear. I may think about dusting of some tapes and finishing these ten billion weddings that I have to edit and then finish Emily and DOTP. Well we will see.
6 commentsThirteen
So we went last night to watch the movie Thirteen that is playing at the Princess One. All I have to say is what a fabulous no a fantastic, no wait what a fabulously fantastic movie. I didn’t know if it because the movie is kinda close to home, or if it is that the movie is well made, but I just can’t get it out of my mind. Every scene and camera shot is burned vividly into my thoughts and when I try to do other stuff, to think about something else I simply can’t. I won’t get into the details of it simply because if I was you and hadn’t seen it I wouldn’t want to know, and I would have stopped reading, but this was a movie that captured my full attention and has had my full attention ever since. I say it is close to home, because it shows the way that it was when I was this age, people actually did these things then and it is interesting to see that things haven’t changed much halfway across a continent. Any way I will stop before I turn in to those people that I hate that blither on and on about the characters and about how the plot is expanded and blaaa blaaa bllaaa. But if I were to ever teach a class about movie making, or effective story telling, (not that I am an expert) this would be the text book. GO SEE IT!
No commentsPhotoshoot With Jodie & Per
This afternoon I had a photo shoot with Jodie and Per. We went to this crazy field that I drive by on my way to Devon every weekend. We started the day with a trip to Value Village for some crazy clothes, and then. We tried some of the normal sort of stuff at first which was a lot of fun, but then we started being a little more on the odd side. I will have some more shots soon, but for now here is what I do have.

Yoshimi Battles the Tiger
Well I am off to work soon But before I do that I just have to drop and Line to my journal to say that After Much persuasion and letter writing I have convinced Darren The Tiger to start posting into a blog again. I am glad that it didn’t have to come to the driving down to Van and dancing on your doorstep naked screaming like a banshee about the evil the lives inside the door to get you to concede :) check it out here

Roo I have a song for you. Ani Difranco - Pixie. I have been madly finishing up the yellow page advertisement and stuff. *Thanks to Scotty for the back seat photoshopping :) We took our prospective ad and printed it off on crappy newsprint at the right size, we then cut it out, opened up the yellow pages and stuck it over top of other ad’s the same size. I think that it will look good and stand out from the others in the book. I am really scared about this whole Ad in the yellow pages thing. I mean what if I don’t get any customers from it, which would be a lot of money down the drain. Or worse what if I get swamped with people? I mean there is only so much that I can do :)
Well I have finished Melissa’s Wedding, Greg & Anita’s Wedding, and Jodie’s Cd’s. I just need to book some burner time at Mikes place and fire off a whack. I am happy with most of the shots although I can see room for improvement in a lot of places. We bought some colour ink for our printer and I realized that a 50 dollar printer is unable to compare to 300 dollar one in terms of quality :)
I need to sleep more. This going to bed at 5:00am and up at 8:00am thing is not working out. It isn’t really a healthy amount of sleep, especially when it is the amount that you get everyday :). I guess I am getting older, because I used to sleep 3 to 4 hours a night for, well, ever. As of late I can’t really do it anymore. Well I can, but it is less enjoyable :)
Clear your calendar for next Saturday (not tomorrow but a week away) for the ever loved R&M Shindig. We are having a rocken get-together next Saturday, so bring you self, your friends, and come on down to R&M loft. Much merry making and such will occur I assure you! More details to come as the week goes on!

No commentsPARKING NAZIS FUCK OFF
First a song! Listen to this song while reading!!!
Well I was going to post this as a comment on Dar’s blog but as you can see it sorta got outta hand and I felt that the best thing is to post it here. Well in response to Dar’s post parking meter maid nazi I to have a story about how I was accosted by Gestapo while waiting to pick up Scotty and Miranda from work. He comes up and says that I will have to move, no problem, i mean there are rules for a reason, I can move my car, I shouldnt be driving so much anyway. I do hate circling the block around and around like a drunken vulture, but if the man asks, I will do it for the better of socity. I mean he is only doing his job right? At least that is what I thought until today. So the parking gestapo says “you will have to move your car.”I say ok and before I do I look to if there is any sign of the dynamic duo, and sure enough there is Scotty and Miranda walking towards the car. So I say in my best polite voice about how I am sorry but the people that I am waiting for are right there. To which he replies “if you don’t move your car it will cost you 45 dollars! How is that for Attitude” I though that it was a well expressed bout of attitude how ever I was failing to see the relevance to our particular conversation and situation. How is what for attitude? What the Fuck is that? I was nice to him; I was not in any way giving him any thing that could be remotely construed as Attitude. So I resist the urge to do something very bad to this man and say “I am sorry sir but they are right there. (Scotty and Miranda were about 10 feet from the car) to which he replies “well they are going to cost you 45 dollars you know! and he walks to the back of the car. Now I think that he didn’t really think that they were right there, I think that he thought I was full of shit or something cause as Scotty and Miranda damn near trip over him to get into the car he backed off and stood looking silly. I mean I am trying really hard to relax and take it easy when it comes to other people, I have been resisting the urges to grab people by the back of the head and smash there face repeatedly into the largest and hardest objects that are readily available, but its really hard some times. I am reminded of a particular spoken word piece that really expresses my feelings to a tee. This one is for you Dar :)
It is called A Little Restraint.
Awake again
So I am wondering now what it is that I am doing up at 8 O’clock in the morning, But there it is. I am. I think that I will clean the kitchen!

Well here it is
So I am not really sure if this design will last but we will see, let me know what you all think. I am still having trouble here and there but as it stands right now this is the basic layout. I am really excited about not having to be nice and congenial about everything that I say here. In fact if I was to feel like saying fuck right now I could with out worrying about the wrong people seeing it:) Any who I am off to get Miranda and Scotty from work and drive them about. :)
3 commentsNew layout soon
So after figuring out how to do some funky things I think that the rphoto site will be finished sooner then I had originally thought. So with this new turn of events I Have decided to turn some much needed attention towards my photo journal.
I find this site to be a little bit to stuffy to be the online representation of me and who I am, so I feel that a complete redesign is in order. Please stay tuned over the next few days to see what this will develop into :)
My week in Calgary
9/10/2003 11:56:28 AM
So I am sitting here in Grabba Jabba Having a coffee waiting for my camera battery to charge up. I have been wandering around Calgary’s downtown all morning with no real definitive destination in mind. I have got a few great pictures here I think, although I have no idea when I am going to be able to get to them. Maybe tonight I can look at a few and try to post them. I realized this morning that our sites are down and I haven’t a clue as to why. I can not get to anything in our network, and I fear that the router or our DSL is down. Mike is going to reboot the works next time he is over there. I miss our kitten a whole bunch, I wish he traveled better for then I would bring him everywhere with us. I feel that I have been far too conservative with the picture taking but I am also not bracketing many shots so it may be just that that makes me think I am not taking enough pictures. I took some shots of some broken glass at a C-train station, but in reviewing them I may go back and see about taking some more. I mean I would jump at it cept it is what feels Like 10 trillion blocks away. Perhaps I will take the C-train (which is free downtown ALL the time, Unlike Edmonton and there wonky hours of 9 to 3) and save my self some walking. Well the battery is still blinking three times (for those not in the know it has levels of charging that are indicated by the number of sequential blinks) so perhaps I will grab another coffee. AHhhahahha As I was typing this it stopped blinking and is charged ahhaahah. It would seem that I don’t need another coffee after all. Well I better get back at it then.
9/10/2003 2:21:28 PM
So I am now at our Hotel again. Man I am tired. I have walked like there was know tomorrow. I had the GPS attached to my backpack for the entire time that I was about. However, large office buildings and such tend to block the signal so I can only guess as to where I went in between :) Not to mention that when My GPS has poor signal it tends to make stuff up sometimes. For example it said that my distance traveled was 441 km now I am pretty sure that I reset it when I got here but who knows.
I am transferring more pictures and taking a rest, having a coffee, charging batteries :)
9/11/2003 8:34:52 AM
It is our last day in Calgary and on one hand I am glad and the other I am not. But one thing I can say for sure is that I miss our kitten I am really to go home simply to play with him, and cuddle him, and have him bitch at me for not being there. I am really glad that we are going to take him to Montr?al because I don’t think I could be away for that long :) Mike & Michelle have been going over every day to feed & play with him, so I hope that he isn’t too lonely. I am packing up our hotel and I can’t believe just how one can move in to there new surroundings, it looks like we have been here a week not three days :). Last night we went for dinner with Miranda’s go worker Stacey who is also in Calgary. We went to this great restaurant on McLeod and 17th that was absolutely fabulous. It was called Ed’s I believe. We were there for a few hours while they talked about work and I thought about other stuff. The food was great and not that Expensive or anything. But on that note I better get at it the packing.
9/11/2003 11:15:24 AM
So I am sitting in this Cafe at the Calgary zoo dumping the CF Card and having lunch. Man the weather sure turned miserable out. That day that started out great with lots of sunshine and warm has turned into what feels like an October or November day. I have my hoody on and I am still sort of cold. Anyway this is a really nonce Zoo here. The cages look all up kept and neat while the grounds and such are lush and vibrant. One could spend an entire Day here and not even scratch the surface of what there is to see. I am going to give it the best breeze through that I can but I don’t really know if I can get it all in. I am a little disappointed that the animals are mostly behind cages as apposed to a more open concept like San Diego’s is (or so I have heard) But I guess what can you do when there is only so much money. The Gorillas have the open concept as much as they can which is very cool.

But the cards had finished so I will sign off.
9/11/2003 8:05 PM
So we are home now, and I fixed our website so now you can all read about the weeks events :) I hung around the Zoo till about 1 O’clock and I went and had a nap in the car til about 2ish when Miranda called me to come get her so we could come home and Here we are. But my cat is calling me to come and Play with him so I am going to go now. I may post later tonight after Coffee with Mike.
A Moron & His Spam!
Some moron used the comments function of my journal to post his spam. What an ass!! Let me rephrase that, “What a really dumb ass!” I mean First, of all the blogs out there in the world he choose mine to spam, My journal with its three or four readers (if there is more I am sorry I just don’t know) is one that the spam is least likely to be seen on! No only that but the moron decided to pick some random post from way back as well. Like I might not notice that the spam is there or something. Well guess what buddy if you try and hide it it isn’t to effective now is it. So I ran a search for the email addy that he used and all I found were peoples comments and guest books from there personal site. I think that this guy should really take a marketing class or something because I am no genus but I would think pissing off a whole whack of people in an attempt to get them to buy from is probably not the most efficient means of going about advertising. But hey what can I say. On an different note I am in Calgary and sitting near the window of our 24th floor hotel in the Downtown. w00t! I am on dial up and I have come to the conclusion that every high speed user should be forced to use dial up at least once a month just so they remember how lucky they really are :)

This is a shot of the bridge with stone lions on it (I can’t remember its name) from our hotel
Wandering & Wavering
Today I didn’t work, so I spent the day getting ready to go to Calgary and wandering about taking pictures. I wandered down the park area that they are turning into a bike path and the High Level Street Car extension. It is right next the 109St on the north side of the High level Bridge for those not in the know. They have railway ties galore all stacked up near the PetroCan. I had full intentions of taking the Street Car down to whyte ave. However it wasn’t running today. I mean it is Monday, I am sure that it is a poor day for tourists, not to mention the weather. So instead I walked down from the tracks and across the high level bridge. When I got near the south side of the bridge there was this almost perfect spiral made from wood chips and stuff in a clearing.
  ![]()
It made me think about this guy that takes pictures of flaming Spirals or this crazy guy Robert Smithson, that made a huge spiral of gravel and dirt in some lake in Utah that was this crazy installation art. He made it with the intentions that the water would over take the “art” and it would become part of the earth again. He thought that if the piece was not eternal, that it would not last the seasons and would disappear, it would be better art then if it was eternal and ever lasting. He was part of this crazy group that made art that could only be viewed right then. Like that other crazy guy Christo that wraps things, big things, Like islands and Bridges. Anyway I took some pictures of this one.
So onward I went really wondering why it is that I don’t do this sort of thing more often. I mean I really like just wondering about seeing what I can see. I was wondering with a semi destination in mind. I wanted to go back to this tree that I took picture of a while back and try again, cause I wasn’t really one hundred percent pleased with the first one. As I was wandering around in the blocks that are behind Keegans, I thought that I smelled Gasoline. Just as I was pondering this a pair of girls came up and said “hey do you have a cell phone?” What it was, is there was this really really big Ford pickup
![]()
that was poring fuel out its side and on to the street. It was literally running out of this truck, and into the street. There was a huge puddle of gas hanging out in the street. So I phoned the fire deptment and they came in minutes to clean up the mess.

I watched for a min and continued walking to my tree.
After successfully capturing the tree I wondered around and ended up on whyte Ave. I bought one if the touristy books about Montr?al you know the lonely planet type of Guides except I actually didn’t get the lonely planet one because it was all about the best place to stay in Montr?al and How to get there and back and Stuff. This one

has hardly any of that good stuff and appears to be more focused on the stuff in the city.I was about to take a picture of the Old post office when this group of guys come up and say hey you wanna take a picture of my mouse? My first instinct was to say depends on the mouse and where it is, but before I had the chance to make and Ass of my self pretending that I wit he opened a box that actually had a very little brown mouse in it. I took the picture
![]()
and they went on there way. I wandered some more an eventually caught a bus home. That has been my day thus far, but I had better get ready for Calgary.
Today today
So my Mother came in to the city today and we had a good visit. I drove her about a bit this afternoon, and then Her, Dan, Miranda and I went for Dinner at Joey Tomatoes. It was an absolute blast to see these two sheltered, and half crazy country folk in a place like Joey Tomatoes. It was great, I even got to teach my Mom how to say Quesadia(Sp?) and then explain what it was. I otherwise spent the day in my office running through hundreds of photos on my computer. I have this new personal goal you see. I have personally declared that I will have gone through all the pictures by the end of the month that they were taken in. Well I am almost done august :) (Well I guess not almost done so much as getting close to the point in which I can say that I am getting close to the point of saying that I am almost done.) The idea is that I will have this month end motivation, but I am really glad that the latest Jasper trip that mike & I just did falls into September other wise I simply wouldn’t have a hope.
Now I am really torn about the Weakerthans show that is coming up. On one hand I really wanna go simply because the Weakerthans totally rock, (I just realized what I have just typed and I am waiting for Keanu Reaves to jump out from behind the computer and yell “DUDE!!!!!) but on the other hand I probably wouldn’t enjoy it as much as I think I would. I have discovered that most band that I really really like to listen to on albums aren’t the best live. I mean some bands can really shake it up on stage but I really don’t get into it. I think it is because I have certain delusions about the band that I would really like to be left as is. I mean I have a mental image of the players and the personalities that go with that and everything. I think that is what makes listening to them on Cd so enjoyable to me, they are people that I “know” and like because I have made them up in my mind based on there music. The idea of going to a show that I will actually see these people and crush the fictional characters that I have made in my head is not that appealing. Now I do like going to shows don’t get me wrong but I get far better enjoyment out of a band that I have never heard of because I can forgo all the aforementioned stuff and just get to know the person as they are..
Well I am back at the photos trying to get as many done as I can because I will be short on time for the rest of the week. Tomorrow is Scotty’s Birthday bash at the nontraditional but far more convenient location of Nikitas, which will be loads of fun I am sure. On Saturday I may have a double shuttle that wouldn’t get me back into town until late afternoon, and Sunday we are off to my Grandfathers for a barbecue, so on and so forth.
I got a comment on one of my journal entries from Dar today. w00t!! I haven’t really had a comment before; I in fact thought that the comments thing didn’t even work :) Thank you for the comment :) This actually brings me to my next point about the posting that I have been doing lately. As some of you may notice I am posting more actual content then I have been in a while. I can explain this new found voice that I have. I actually used to post quite a bit of stuff back in the day but it fades in and out with the seasons. However, as of late I have really wanted to post more here but I was keeping this pretty low key because I would send people that were interested in my photography here, and in an effort to retain some sense of professionalism I would refrain from posting inane garbage, mild ramblings, & full fledged rants. But as of a while ago I have a new site to send people to so I can have my personal ranting, photo blog back. And the prospect of actually having some sort of audience is a huge motivator as well. I also hope that if I get time I will change the layout of the site to something a little more fun. We will see.
These are the best lines from a Weakerthans song Confessions of a Futon Revolutionist! (in the Mp3 List to your right)
Leave the apartment to buy alcohol
Hung our diplomas on the bathroom wall
Let’s plant a bomb at city hall and kill an MLA!
and talk the night away.

Aftermath of Jasper
Mike and I left for Jasper at 4am yesterday morning. So that means that I got up at 3:45am and fell into to shower and rolled out the door on to the elevator to fall to the ground floor and into the car. :) Our first major stop on the way to Japer was near Edson. As we had left Edson there was all this crazy fog all about, of which we took many shots. I just hope that I will be able to crop the hiway out of them. After stopping there we continued onward towards Jasper. We stopped a lot once we hit the park. We wouldnt make it much farther then about 10 km’s before we would stop and get out. We went to Maligne Canon, Athabasca falls, and all around Jasper and other trails. We were going to go up the gondola in jasper but they wanted 20 bux each to go up a freaking mountain. I mean the view would have been lovely and everything but 20 bux, Come on. I remember when I was in Junior Forest Wardens back in the day, we would do these epic treks in to Jasper and areas, and we had this game that we would play where we would stop the Mini van and get out on the side of the road and pretend to take pictures and point at a spot in the ditch. It would take about 5 min or so for the crowd of crazy tourists to stop as well and bail out of there cars and Motor Homes armed to the teeth with video cameras and point and shoots, all wondering what this group of 6 to 8 kids were looking at. We would wait until the group of cars was large enough to sustain it self and we would get back into the van and fuck off, laughing the entire time. I am serous give this a try next time you get to Jasper it works really well if you have kids. Crouch behind them looking over there shoulder and point at some imaginary thing in the bush. I mean do all you can to look like a commercial for family unity or something. You will have a flock of tourists in no time. So any way back on topic Mike and I are stopping every 10kms and we had this small window of about 2 to 3 min to get whatever shot we wanted before there was a gaggle of tourists milling about. It was crazy. So anyway we drove everywhere and did everything that one can do in Japer in a day. :) We didn’t get home till after 9 last night and man I crashed hard. I did some photos of Miranda’s new skirt and fell on the bed and fell asleep. I slept really deep and sound till about 8 this morning when Miranda woke me up. So today I crawled out of bed and man I felt like I had been rode hard and put up wet.(a horse riding analogy for those that don’t know.) I drove Miranda to work and went to work my self. I was originally going to be driving to Rocky mountain house today but Roland ended up doing that yesterday. SO I come in to the shop in Sherwood Park and Corina says Oh hi, what are you doing here, and I say well I am here to work and stuff. She says oh well other then the Rocky trip there isn’t really any thing here for you to do. And I said really ok well I will see you on Friday then I then drove home and fell back to sleep and didn’t wake up till 2 this after noon. It was a great sleep except that I dreamt that I was a new clergy man for a militant religious group that took over a country and was ruling it with an iron fist. I was part of a group that was a mix of Christianity and random idol worship, soothsayers and really really big guns. I woke up and my laptop was playing the BBC news over the internet, they were discussing the bomb blast that killed Ayatollah Hakima and his funeral as well as much speculation about who may be responsible for Fridays Bomb blast. I think that the two may be connected. So there was another bomb attack in Iraq today, good to see that the bush admin has everything under control there.
There is Culture Club in my MP3 Play list. I blame Miranda.
On a other note I got the mail today and there is a letter from the CIBC in regards to my visa that has in red writing on the front “IMPOTANT: Cheque Enclosed” I would have not given it a second thought believing it to be some “You may have already won one billion dollars and a fried chicken” type thing. But it was from the CIBC and I foolishly thought to my self well they are a bank, they wouldn’t do crap like that. Well I was really wrong. It did contain a cheque for five dollars, but the catch is that if you cash this cheque you are agreeing to sign up for Visa payment protection and they will charge you 24,95 a year plus GST. I think this sorta thing should be coming from Ed Mcman and Dick Clark NOT my bank.
My cat is cute and sitting on my laptop
Tom Waits is really good, I keep coming back to him in my Play list and I have yet to be disappointed, Jersey Girl, Hold on, and Everyone favorite I Don’t Wanna Grow Up
