I am of to Jasper for the day.

There is lighting occurring out side right now and I am really, i mean, really resisting the urge to run to the car with my camera, and drive for three quarters of an hour to find some spot to take photos of it all. The only reason I am resisting such a great photo opportunity is I am off to Jasper for the day in about 5 hours of so. Mike and I are leaving at 4AM for the day to see what we can see. We will hit the Maligne Valley area, Pyramid Lake, and the Jasper Gondola for sure, but after that if we have time left we will for sure take a gander around at the other great sites to be seen in jasper. But I started thinking to myself about the last day trip that I did to jasper for Work. I say to my self
Self, did you ever really look though the pictures that you took while you were in jasper?” and self replies with
Mmmmmm…. Well… Ummm…. I ahhh… Well… Well no not really.
Oh really”, self says “perhaps one should really take a gander at such?
yes that would be a grand idea!
And there was a bit more mediocre & pointless dialogue and such the most of which is all far too triveal & pointless to deliver here. Instead, I will let the photos do most of the talking.

Some of you may think that you recognize this photo from a past shot of mine that I posted on the 21 of Feb. however it is just the same mountain in a different season. See I have to say that I enjoy the Feb shot much more then this but this is worthy of a journal post.

A Rusted Roof

This is a shot that was taken out side the hotel that I had to wait at in Calgary. The hotel and area were built into the side of a hill so the parking lot was quite high above the area around it. This building which was part of a machine shop (I think) & was just over the railing. It was getting close to sunset, and the air that was filled with all the crazy smoke from the Lost Creek fire in the Crowsnest Pass was making anything that had red in it stand out more the usual.

Show @ the Sugarbowl Last night

Last night Miranda and I went to one of Blackdot’s shows at the Sugarbowl. It was great to get out and see a band and we also got to see Liv, who I haven’t seen since she moved to Winnipeg last year. Here are some grainy shots from the show. This is Sleeping Girl. They are a cool acoustic band that really was quite good.

Day trip to Jasper

So this holiday Monday we (Mike, Miranda, & I) are planning to drive out to Jasper for the day. I think that we should if the weather is in our favor get some great shots. We will see. I haven’t any thing in particular that I am looking to capture, but I think Mike has an idea of what he wants. I hope to get some good shots none the less.

Leaf Cast

This is a shot of a sidewalk that I happened across on my way home from The Fringe Fest. It looks as though the leaves that made these imprints fell on the cement while it was still wet, leaving these perfect casts.

Some Rusty Steel

This is a shot of the steel grating on one of the Canoe trailers from where I work. I was waiting to meet Roland at Hermitage Park and you know me if there is time to kill it will be done with 20 or 30 photos. :) The colour’s beneath the rusty metal are a combination of the parks lawn and the blue trailer.

Caterpillar

This is a shot that I took at Hermitage Park in Edmonton while Roland and I were loading Canoes. S/He was on this leaf off in the corner, but I was to busy at the time to grab my camera. I though for sure that it would move on and I wouldn’t get the shot later, but when we were done loading canoes and ready to leave I walked back to see. And there it was in the same spot and everything so I grabbed a couple macros of it.

Yesterday I wondered Around

So Yesterday I went for a wonder down to the Fringe Grounds to see what I could see. I was only there about 10 min when I ran into Maya who has got to be one of the most hardcore Fringers that I know. Apparently she has been at the fringe everyday since it started from 6am till midnight. So we wondered about for a while and I was able to grab some shots of the outdoor shows that were going on. Later after she had gone of to a show that she wanted to see I wondered back towards the High level bridge, and while I was walking I took some shots of a tree in the back streets of Old Strathcona, as well as a neat sidewalk that had cement outlines of leaves that must have fallen on the area when the cement was wet. I will have some up soon.

My Week

Well for those that are wondering why I resolved to post everyday and haven’t for the last week, my excuse is that I was out of town for the two days, and then I have been busy with Weddings and other photo shoots, and I assure you that I am not making this all up to make you think that I have a valid excuse. Let’s start off with this Monday. On Monday I had to drive a huge Van to Calgary, meet one of the Tour guides and exchange my van for his. So that was a lot of fun I got a little lost in Calgary (You think I had never lived there before or something) but I was having a good time driving. I grabbed as many pics as I could but the Smoke form the forest fires made things pretty hazy.

On Tuesday I got to drive to Jasper for the day to take a group of Germans for an unguided canoe trip down the Athabasca River. It was great because they almost didn’t get to go to Jasper, again due to fires but when we called the trail office from Hinton the river had just opened. So I was able to grab a lot of pictures of the Mountains in and around Jasper, of which,

I should have some more online soon. Wednesday I did a lot of sleeping and caught up on my email and such, however Mike and I did get a chance to grab some long exposures of the downtown.

I also got a great shot of the moon that was almost full, a shot that wouldn’t have been possible with out the aid of digital real time feedback.

I tried getting some nice longer exposures of the car lighted by multiple flashes but they didn’t work out as well as before. So then on Thursday I spent a lot of time at mikes place trying to get our business cards in order and get them sent out to the printers and such, however I was still up in arms about the Web addy that I am going to register, so we sort of left that as is. came over later that afternoon to try some studio shots. I wasn’t really prepared creatively for a studio shoot and I was a little unsure technically as well. So it was a quick experiment in the flashes and reflectors with some very positive results

but I sort of forgot that days get shorter and we missed the optimum sun but I got a few shots never the less.

Friday was a day of preparing for the Wedding shoot. I finished the business cards and decided on my URL. Miranda and I went to Greg & Anita’s rehearsal at 6 and figured out how every thing was going to work out for Saturday. their wedding was a wonderful
experience and with the single exception of the photo thank you cards, an absolute joy to do. The service was nice and the reception was even better. We were quite rushed for time for both the photo thank you cards as well as the “informal formals” but we blasted off about 1000 shots that day and we have a lot of great stuff for our portfolio.

A big thanks to Mike for lending us his extra battery and Compact Flash card. After the card & battery were returned to mike we went to Scotty’s place to pick up his Cat. You see Scotty is on vacation and requires a cat sitter so we brought Sadie over to visit us. Sadie and Darwin are getting along in a somewhat amicable manner, however, she (Sadie) is entirely uninterested in playing and as always that is all that Darwin is interested in. That brings us to today where I ran the Canoe shuttle had lunch at Barb & Ernie’s, had a nap, and coffee at Keegans, and now a note to my blog explaining my week. There will be pictures to follow from last week as well whatever new ones from this week.

Looks Like a Wanted Poster

This is a shot from the first full day that I had the Canon 10D. It is a shot of a power pole near the Heritage Promenade. I really like the way that this gig poster really looks like a weather beaten western wanted poster.

The Tunnel

So yesterday after I dropped the shuttle people and M off in Devon, after the trailer was stashed in its home to while away the hours eagerly awaiting the return of the canoes, I ran over to Mikes and picked him up for a picture taking frenzy. We started of by going to a registry office so mike could renew his license, and stopping for a bite to eat but by 2 o’clock we were ready and willing to go hard at getting some good shots. We started of with the idea that we would go to the Muttart Conservatory, and spend the afternoon photographing flowers, exotic cacti, and other odd plants. So we get there and the folk fest that is next door has parking people that are there to stop people from parking in the wrong area’s, and well I think that the lady that we had the pleasure of speaking to didn’t believe us when we said that we were there for the Muttart. A long story short we had leave and try it again another day. So after a spot of driving we decided that we would wander around Whyte ave, but when i was driving to park on the back streets we saw that the doors to the underground tunnel near Keggans where open we dropped all ideas that we had of Whyte Ave fired our fat asses over to the tunnel.

Inside this tunnel is the most amazing graffiti that you will find in Edmonton I am sure. We waited for about five minutes for the train to go through the tunnel and we made the trek inwards. In side the walls are covered from about 6 to 8 feet off the ground in layers upon layers of graffiti.

There is a lot of tags and such but there is a unbelievable amount of great full fledged mural sized works here, including words, pictures, and a mix of both. As we were wondering deeper inwards we saw another fellow with a camera and a tripod coming from the other end.

It turns out that he is a NAIT student and he had a Canon D60 and speedlite and was doing the exact same thing as mike and I. So we chatted for a bit about cameras, technique, and other stuff and continued on in opposite directions. After about an hour or what not we were told to leave by a nice man that worked with the train shuttle, which we did because we aren’t Assholes or anything.

But there is a few shots that are to come and this is by far not even scratching the surface of what’s in there. We are going to have to make a return trip with flashlights and flash umbrellas to get some good shots of more works in there. We decided that we would spend some time at the University looking for good shots but that is another story that is soon to come.

Fire on Calgary Trail

Tonight on our way home there was a fire at Recreation World on Calgary Trail and 69ave. We stopped and took some picture but the firefighters were far too efficient and had the fire mostly out buy the time we got there with the camera.

Under the Bridge

So the other day I was under a bridge like the troll that I am when I see some graffiti on the bridge.

Now you may think to your self man that isn’t very fancy graffiti or anything, in fact anyone that rides the LRT or has been in the train tunnel near the High level bridge (Where Mike and I were today, there will be pics to come soon) will tell me that I am wasting space with this graffiti. Well let me show you where it came from.

Well now to give you an idea of scale those red and white things in the bottom are about 10 to 12 feet long. The bridge is bloody huge. Crazy fuckers I tell you! I mean you really have to wanna die or be cool to traverse under a bridge and fuck around really far up above a shallow river. Crazy
